You now have joined the creative yet familiar territory of the virtual worlds. You are done with exploring, have understood the basics of how to survive here, and now the big question looms over you.

What type of land should I buy?

It is a relevant question considering the fact that investment into virtual property is as important as investment into real property. This is for the sheer reason that in future, your virtual property investment can turn into either a real income source, or an escape from the regular routine.

Before jumping into buying land, you should first know the various lands that are available as offerings in Second Life™ (SL).

Let us look at the classification.

Second Life Grid:

1) Mainland
2) Private Estates
a. Full Region
b. Homestead
c. Open Space

Grid in layman’s language refers to the integrated system wherein all the services like regions, inventory management, avatar presence etc are stored.

Let us first differentiate between the mainland and private estate and the types of the private estates.

Refer to the charts which follow:
Article_1-Charts_Regions
Once you have figured out what type of region suits your requirement, next question is from where to buy? Mind you, there are not just direct sim owners who lease out the land, but also various intermediaries. We will learn more about them in detail later in the series.
