Article 3: How to buy land from In-World Company?
Buying land within Second Life™ can be bit tedious and confusing. Tedious, because it does take time to find the land that suits your requirement. But there is something you should know before you jump into celebrations of your first land. I’ll call it “The Land Chain”.
Like we have various levels of distributions in Real Life, we have same in Second Life™ for the lands.
Consider the following example:
Mr. A buys land from Linden Labs™ which he further rents to Mr. B with Estate Management rights. Now, Mr. B, he splits the land into 4 quarters and puts them up for sale. Mr. and Mrs. C decide to rent the quarter from Mr. B. Mr. and Mrs. S decides to rent out the homes on the land to Mr. D, Ms. E and Ms F.
So the land chain goes like:
Linden Labs > Mr. A > Mr. B > Mr. and Mrs. C > Mr. D, Ms. E and Ms F
Now, Mr. B stops the rental payments to Mr. A. You can very well imagine what would follow. A domino effect- C, D, E and F would all be hanging in air. The worst and logical part is Mr. A will not be liable for any kind of refunds whatsoever because C, D, E and F did not pay directly to Mr. A.
So how do you find out whether you are renting land from a middle person or from direct seller? It is simple. You just see the “World/Region Settings”.
To see who the real owner is, just follow these steps:
1) Right click on land you are planning to buy, and click About Land.
A window “About Land” will open.
2) Click on the tab “Covenant”.
Refer to the image below:

The Estate Owner name says Kenzie Kytori.
So if you are not paying directly to Kenzie Kytori but to any other land owner, you are at risk of losing land.
Sometimes, the Estate Owner uses the “alt/alternative” account. Therefore do confirm before you perceive the “Alt Account” to be an intermediary.
Before buying the land, make sure you are buying it directly from the owner; meaning your money is going to Estate Owner/alt account of Estate Owner ONLY.
So when you plan to buy land, do keep in mind to buy directly from the Estate Owner to avoid any kind of risk.
This reminds me of a nice quote:
”The land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for the land is mine; with me you are but aliens and tenants.”
